An Honest Man

A Wonderful Obituary

Gabriel Carpenter moved to the area in 1837 with his wife Susanna. “Although he lived and died a poor man, he left his children a bright legacy [as] an affectionate father, a good neighbor, and most of all – AN HONEST MAN.” He maintained that it was easy to stay happy because “‘In the morning, I whistle because I expect to earn a day’s wages for my family, and in the evening, I whistle because I have earned it.’” (Basner 220-21)
