In 1835, a log structure for the New Berlin School was built. One of the pastimes of the boys was to engage in spelling competitions– including with other area schools such as Greentown School. The boys would travel as far as six or eight miles so that they could ride there with their "Best Girl." These events began with the boys laughing and singing their way out of town. And "sometimes some of our boys would get into a fight with some of the other scholars, and there would be a general row" (Basner 30).
