Unlike many villages, New Berlin was not founded along a waterway or near a church. Instead, New Berlin grew up around a crossroad. As industry grew, old fashioned roads were no longer the best way to transport goods. Boss Hoover wanted to sell his horse collars further than he could travel by wagon. "The nearest railroad stop was in Canton, approximately eight miles away." Boss Hoover learned about a company that was building electric railways to connect cities. With the help of Charles Kolp, he obtained the financing to connect New Berlin to the world. The first traincar arrived in 1902 (Hall and Kieffer 45).
