The Old Red Mill

A Republic, Not an Empire...

The Old Red Mill was owned by Samuel Holl and Peter Kaufman. It was originally a woolen mill on the Nimischillen Creek but Holl and Kaufman renovated and enlarged it into the area’s flour mill. Mrs. Kaufman wanted to rename it Empire Mills, but Samuel objected saying that we live “in a republic, not an empire.” Henry Holl wrote a poem about the mill in which he – among other details – shared the story of Henry Brubaker, the miller, being robbed in the night and tracking the robber to a nearby farm the next day. (Basner 43-49)
