Everhard and the Red
School House
William H. Everhard: A Stern Schoolmaster
In 1857, William H. Everhard came to New Berlin as the new teacher at the Red School House. The children of New Berlin had a reputation for not being easy to handle, but Mr. Everhard was up the challenge. When children misbehaved, Mr. Everhard, a man at least six feet tall, would accompany the children home and dine with the family. After a pleasant meal, he would loudly scold the child and then march out the door. He quickly got the children of New Berlin in line (Basner 30-31).
